Despite Ford’s efforts to increase the 2021 Ford F-150 pickup production, the semiconductor chip shortage has forced the automaker to idle assembly on its best-selling truck. On August 30, the Ford Kansas City Assembly Plant suspend the Ford F-150 and Lincoln Nautilus production. In addition to these plant closures, F-150 production at the Ford Dearborn Truck Plant will be on a reduced schedule.
A Ford spokesperson stated that “our teams continue making the most of our available semiconductor allocation, finding unique solutions to provide as many high-quality vehicles as possible to our dealers and customers.” While some automakers continue to remove advanced features from vehicles as a way around part shortages, to date, Ford has only given 2021 F-150 customers the option to order trucks without automatic start/stop. Ford executives recently stated that they expect the chip shortage to last until June next year, but others think it will persist for many years.
