The Ford 3.5L PowerBoost V6 hybrid engine and the Pro Power Onboard generator, which are available in the Ford F-150, have been life-savers on many occasions this year. First, several 2021 F150 hybrids were dispatched to Louisiana to assist those affected by Hurricane Ida. Then, a PowerBoost pickup came to the rescue when the power went out at a wedding reception this summer. Therefore it’s not surprising that the PowerBoost engine has been named one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines in 2021.
As Ward points out, the PowerBoost is the most powerful offering in Ford’s F-150 lineup. It produces 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque, with a maximum towing capacity of 12,700 lbs. The PowerBoost is also the most efficient, with EPA fuel-efficiency ratings of up to 24 MPG in the city. It can also travel as far as 700 miles on a single tank of gas.
The 2021 Ward’s Top 10 Engines List jurors found that the PowerBoost seamlessly switches between ICE and EV power with little to no noise from the electric engine. While upgrading to the hybrid powertrain costs money, it can be a cost-saving investment that could pay for itself depending on how the owner drives.
